Christmas tips
In my early days I couldn’t understand how I would survive the holiday season. How do you enjoy the festivities without drinking? How should I interact with family and friends for lunches and meals out? Speaking to my sponsor, we discussed a plan for me to attend the family functions in a pub. It was suggested I ate before I even went to the meal as there is always an hour plus delay. I always take my own car so I can escape at any time (I don’t offer to be the taxi for anyone). I make sure I check when and where the event is on and plan the route in advance. I explain to the host that I can attend; however, I may leave early and for them not to worry.
I realised after a few events that I really wasn’t missed and definitely not as often as I thought I would be! Once I was there, for me there needed to be food or music for me to stay, watching people drink was no good for my head. I also realised that once I heard drunken stories being repeated, it’s time for me to get out of there. I also talk to my Higher Power before I attend the night out as it keeps my spiritual connection to stop me from being tempted. It’s very easy for me to think that I might be able to drink like a normal person. However, I smash that illusion very quickly and fast forward to how the night would be for me. I’d dress nice at the start of the night, and I’d have lost my handbag, probably wet myself, and be covered in vomit by the end of the night. In January 2025 I was 19 years sober one day at a time, if it’s helped me maybe it will help you. God bless you.
