Steps Two and Three - like many, I wanted nothing to do with the ‘God’ word when I came into AA. I would avoid saying it during the Serenity Prayer and I would feel irritated if I heard other people at the meetings mention it or their ‘Higher Power’. A few years down the line I can laugh at how I thought back then, I see and hear myself in newcomers I meet now - and so the story repeats!
Once I started to work through the Steps and someone took the time to help me understand, I started to find my own Higher Power in Steps Two and Three - the irritation also began to slip away. I learnt that the actual AA meeting could be my ‘HP’ and the people within it - after all, I couldn’t get sober on my own before AA and the people in the meeting had helped me, so they must be more
powerful than me! Over time, the ‘power greater than ourselves’ morphed into various forms, including nature, relatives passed and even an old dog of mine!
Now, I don’t really know what it is, but I know it certainly is greater than me, it’s with me all of the time - as long as I allow it to be and importantly, I know it is far bigger than me and I have to put my trust within it every day to help me stay sober.
