For many, January can signal a fresh start - the time of year when we try to make those changes we’ve been promising ourselves or our loved ones. Whether you are new to AA, back after some time out, or you’ve been here for years, we hope you find the identification you need within this month’s issue. You might also like to consider putting pen to paper or fingers to the keyboard and sending in an article (or two) this year.
Step One of our Programme has two parts - the first part I got straight away, I knew I was powerless over alcohol, I knew that when I drank I could not guarantee what would happen or my own safety. I certainly could not guarantee how much I would drink either! However, it took me a long time before I ‘heard’ and understood the second bit - that life was unmanageable. When I finally understood that bit, it all made sense. Although I had been sober a while by that point, life was still utter chaos and I had little control over what happened and how I reacted to situations. Hearing the words: “...that our lives had become unmanageable”, was a real turning point for me and I started to see more than just the need to stop drinking. AA was a Programme for my whole life both in length and the contents of it.
