Sobriety and employment... so many stories this topic conjures up for us - numerous memories and lucky escapes! I didn’t ever lose a job due to my drinking, but I certainly left one on more than one occasion because I knew my lies and behaviour were catching up on me!

I had no sense of responsibility when I was drinking and I can’t believe how I used to behave at work or how my behaviour reflected on my employer - I worked in the hospitality trade for much of my drinking life. I was surrounded by alcohol and I certainly made use of it. I was either sampling it myself or encouraging fellow employees and guests to drink how I drank, filling them up and enjoying the atmosphere.

Eventually I started to hate myself and realise what I had become. I came to AA because I hurt and couldn’t do it any more and AA seemed like a good idea at the time. As I gained sobriety, I also became responsible, reliable, conscientious and good company to be around (I think!) All of these extra things started to fall into place because I got sober. Today, I have had the same job for over 10 years, I’m useful and I have my own business on the side that is growing each year.

Finding AA and the Fellowship has given me a life and made me the person I should be.
