Roundabout April 2025

Editorial

What would you write to your drinking self? It’s a question that makes you think isn’t it? I marked an AA anniversary recently and it made me think about this question, it also filled me with gratitude for what is in my life now - and what is not. In my letter I would want to tell the ‘still-drinking’ me that life will get better, it will be less grey and I will want to be alive. The problem is, I don’t think I would have listened to me, I’d have said something nasty and bitter in response.

I remember when I arrived at AA and I heard people talk about ‘life beyond your wildest dreams’ - I thought that was nonsense and a bit over the top. Now though, the sober me can see how true this saying is. To the still-drinking me - the bitter, grey me - it will get better and you will want to be alive and more importantly…live!
