Role requirements for Public Information Liaison Officers (PILO)

  • Minimum 2 years of continuous sobriety (3 years for Region).
  • A good understanding of the 12 Steps and 12 Traditions of AA.
  • Regular attendance at AA meetings in the local intergroup area.
  • Available to attend Intergroup meetings and/or Region assemblies.

Key aspects

  • Liaising and Coordinating: The PI Officer serves as a point of contact either between groups and Intergroup, or Intergroups and R Regional PI Officers are also in frequent contact with the PI & Ecomms Sub Committee.
  • Forming a PI committee: Encouraging fellow AA members and other liaison officers to form a committee to assist with PI initiatives.
  • Reaching out: Connecting with professional bodies and relevant public agencies to generate awareness of AA, such as schools, police, councils, hospitals, universities and workplaces.
  • Building relationships: Establishing trust and cooperation with local media by providing information about AA.
  • Understanding anonymity: Careful consideration ought to be given to Tradition 12.
  • Focusing on the message: Prioritising the needs of suffering alcoholics while adhering to AA Traditions.
  • Becoming familiar with PI resources: Utilising the AA Service Handbook (Chapter 1) and all the PI material contained in the Document Library.

All PI Officers are encouraged to register for an official AA email address. This can be done by completing the online registration form. Using an official AA email address will provide officers with access to the Confidential Directory and other resources, such as the AA Service News and the quarterly Public Information Newsletter.

PILOs are encouraged to regularly share the results of their work with GSO, other members and service bodies.
