Thy Will Be Done

Being the smartest guy who ever walked through the doors of AA I knew when I saw the wording of Step 2 that before I could be restored to sanity I had to be insane firstly. Who were they trying to kid? I knew that things got a bit ropey when I was performing, but really I was a decent guy when I was off it – these were my thoughts anyway.

Others had a totally different view to me and had often remarked that I was totally mad, but hey ho I am now in AA and off the drink and everything from here on in is going to be wonderful – I really am a great guy now. And so I stayed off the drink without any 12-step Programme.

The great ‘I’ was still self-will run riot. Of course things only got worse and through pain and suffering I was guided to Step 3 where I tried to live a decent honest life, and through time tried to live my life in accordance with what I still believe today, God’s will for me. A Programme of living which demands rigorous honesty, and through that I now feel that I have been restored to sanity. The foundation of my sobriety was built on the first three Steps of our Programme and I keep that fresh in my mind every day.

Thank you all for helping me learn that there is more to sobriety than stopping drinking.
