Productive changes
I started drinking when I was about 13 years old, and I always drank to excess. I’d never classed myself as an alcoholic, however I did begin to feel my relationship with alcohol wasn’t healthy. I would binge drink until I passed out or couldn’t remember anything, but kept telling myself that I wasn’t an alcoholic because I didn’t rely on alcohol, and I didn’t drink every day.
As I noticed the patterns of my unhealthy relationship with alcohol, I thought I’d try dry January, but as soon as I drank again the binges became longer. I decided I didn’t want to live like that anymore, constantly tired, not present with my daughter, always chasing the next drinking session. So, I gave up alcohol on 30th December 2023. I managed 90 days solo and then I started going to AA. The Fellowship has changed my life, I have been able to work though the Twelve Steps and fully cleanse my soul. The connection and friendships have also been a great help in my long-term sobriety.
I began to feel the benefits after around 16 days of no alcohol, my energy, my attitude, and my outlook on life improved massively. I have more patience with my daughter and just generally feel happier. I’m exercising consistently which I believe is mainly due to having more energy and not recovering from a drinking session for days after a binge, allowing me to fulfil a workout five days out of seven. I’m reading books, being more productive at work and at home. My mental health is the best it has been since I can remember, and I’m no longer suffering with anxiety. My life is amazing today and I’m very grateful to AA for keeping me sober one day at a time.
