This page is for organisations and professionals who would like to understand more about Alcoholics Anonymous and how AA may help the people they work with.
Helping Employees Find AA
Alcohol problems can affect people in any workplace. An employee’s drinking may affect their wellbeing and working life, and employers, managers or colleagues may become concerned without knowing what help is available.
Alcoholics Anonymous (AA) can be a valuable source of support for an employee who wants to stop drinking. By understanding what AA is and how it works, employers can confidently introduce employees to AA when they are looking for help.
What Is Alcoholics Anonymous?
Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of people who have recovered from alcoholism and help each other to live without alcohol.
AA members share their own experiences of alcoholism and recovery, offering hope and support to others who want to stop drinking. Meetings provide an opportunity to hear from people who understand the challenges of alcoholism because they have experienced them themselves.
AA is based on one alcoholic helping another. It is not a professional treatment service or a replacement for medical care, counselling or other specialist support. Instead, AA offers support through the shared experience of its members.
The only requirement for AA membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for membership.
Helping Your Employees
Employees do not need a professional referral to contact AA or attend a meeting.
AA meetings give people the opportunity to meet others who have experienced problems with alcohol and found a way to live without drinking. Support is based on the shared experience of people who understand alcoholism because they have experienced it themselves.
For employers, AA provides another source of ongoing support that employees can access whenever they decide they are ready.
Helping Your Organisation Understand AA
Our Employment Liaison Officer works with employers, HR teams, managers, occupational health professionals and employee assistance programmes across Wiltshire and Bath, helping them understand what Alcoholics Anonymous is, how it works and how employees can access support.
The Liaison Officer can provide information and literature, answer questions about AA and arrange talks or presentations for staff or management. These can help your organisation better understand AA and give managers and those supporting staff greater confidence when discussing the help available.
This is a free service: There is no charge for talks, visits or information provided by Alcoholics Anonymous.
