AA Jersey Channel Islands

Is AA (Alcoholics Anonymous) for You?

Only you can decide if you want to give AA a try or if you think it might help you.

People in AA joined because they could no longer control their drinking. They realized they couldn’t drink safely and learned from others that they weren’t “bad” people, they were sick people. Many found that others shared the same feelings of guilt, loneliness, and hopelessness.

AA encourages people to face what alcohol has done to them honestly. Here are some of the questions AA members asked themselves:

Questions to Ask Yourself

  1. Have you ever decided to stop drinking but only managed to last a few days?

  2. Have you ever lost your memory because of drinking?

  3. Have you ever tried switching from one type of alcohol to another to control your drinking?

  4. Do you often want to keep drinking even after your friends have stopped?

  5. Do you hide alcohol or drink secretly?

  6. When drinking with others, do you sneak extra drinks that they don’t know about?

  7. Do you crave alcohol and feel a sense of relief once you’ve had a drink?

  8. Have you ever tried to stop drinking but failed?

  9. After drinking, have you ever felt remorse and promised yourself you wouldn’t drink again?

  10. Do you drink to feel “normal”?

  11. Have you ever tried to control how much you drink?

  12. Do you ever ignore or forget about the negative consequences of drinking, or convince yourself “this time will be different”?

What’s Your Score?

  • If you answered “Yes” to any one of these questions, you may have trouble with alcohol.

  • The more “Yes” answers you have, the greater the chance that you could be an alcoholic.

Many AA members experienced these same situations and discovered the truth about their alcoholism.
