Help urgently needed for London Telephone Service
The London Telephone & Twelve Stepping Service (LTTS) answers calls every day between 10am and 10pm, with teams of three to four AA members, all with at least one years sobriety, who have undergone a few, short introductory sessions on Telephone Service.
The purpose of the Telephone Service is as a referral service. We are not professionals. Telephone Volunteers’ purpose is to listen with patience and understanding, but ultimately to help guide the call in a useful direction. Where the caller is a suffering alcoholic, this may mean arranging an opportunity to meet with a 12 Stepper in their area. Or where the caller is a professional, or another interested party, it may mean providing appropriate information about Alcoholics Anonymous.
Most volunteers now do this from home, working on four-hour shifts, taking calls from the suffering alcoholic and others. using an app to answer calls, a dedicated website to log call details and an online meeting to communicate with the rest of the team. Many calls come from the London helpline number (020 7407 0700) but the London phone teams also pick up national calls to the 0800 helpline.
This service is supported by the LTTS Committee, which all Intergroup and Region Telephone Liaison Officers (TLOs) attend. The officers on this committee are responsible for keeping the LTTS service operating.
Please consider taking up this service so that we can continue to take calls and offer the hand of AA to those who need it.
