NESIG Service Position Vacancies

There are currently a wide range of service positions that need to be filled at intergroup.
All of these service positions require a good knowledge of our Steps and Traditions or a willingness to become familiar with them. Officers should have an established period of sobriety, ideally not less than two years. It is recommended that they should serve for not less than two years and not more than three years.
If interested, a good suggestion is to talk with your sponsor.
Detailed Information on Roles in all levels of AA can be found in the AA Service Handbook.

Chair
The Chair has the responsibility of convening and conducting the meetings, and
approving the agenda and minutes before they are published.
The chair will carry the executive authority of intergroup but should account for any action taken at the next meeting.
Secretary
The Secretary has the responsibility with the Chair for preparing the agenda and minutes of meetings and for distributing these documents to the groups well before meetings so that there is ample time to discuss the contents.
The Secretary deals with all correspondence, passing for example requests for speakers to outside organisations to the Public Information Officer or a suitable member.
The Secretary keeps in touch with the General Service Office making sure that it promptly has a copy of the minutes and notice of any change of office.
Employment Liaison Officer
An Employment Liaison Officer assumes responsibility for liaising with all sectors of commerce and industry.
Employers are increasingly responsible for the provision of a practical policy and strategy for the health, welfare and safety of employees.
AA can offer a significant contribution to this requirement by the Employment Liaison Officers of Intergroups.
Public Information Liaison Officer
Public Information (PI) in AA means carrying the message of recovery to the still suffering alcoholic by informing the general public about the AA programme.
We do this by getting in touch with professionals and any organisation which is in a position to pass on knowledge of what AA can do for the still suffering alcoholic.
In AAGB, members involved in PI carry the message, using various methods such as distributing leaflets to surgeries and pharmacies, dropping them at libraries and posting with Parish Councils.
AA literature and pamphlets are available to any agency directly connected with the public.
Archivist
Archivists share the aim of preserving the Fellowship’s past and ensuring that fact prevails over fiction or myth. They are responsible for collecting, arranging, preserving and providing access to permanent historical records of enduring value.
The nature of the archival materials they deal with is usually unpublished and unique.
Enthusiasm in Archives work is a pre-requisite. Historical AA knowledge is not. Nobody can be expected to have the understanding and skills for the job, right from the start. This is one reason why Archives is non-rotational, as it is a continuous learning exercise. Storage of materials should not be seen as problematical, ways can be found of safely storing all materials, if the issue is raised by the IG Archivist.
Regional Representatives
Regional Representatives should be chosen as a general rule from amongst serving GSRs but any member, who has the necessary qualifications, even if not at the time serving as a GSR, may be elected.
Such a representative will attend all intergroup meetings to report from the region and to hear from the intergroup their wishes to be expressed at the next regional meeting.
Safeguarding Representative
The GSB has recommended to the AA Fellowship that within the AA structure AA groups appoint Local AA Safeguarding Representatives who are able to provide a DBS certificate, and who can help signpost members to the appropriate agencies should the need arise.
Telephone Liaison Officer
The main purpose of our telephone services is to put the still-suffering alcoholic in touch with an individual contact or AA group.
Telephone services require support and participation by local groups and members. Telephone responders/operators (Scotland)/volunteers (London), should be chosen with care and endorsed through local groups and procedures, have at least 12 months’ continuous sobriety, and have undergone the required training.
The NTSC has prepared comprehensive Training and Safeguarding Guidelines for Telephone Responders, which are available on the AA website.
Young Persons Liaison Officer
The YPLO will be someone who came into AA at the age of 30 or younger, and will be able to relate to the particular problems faced by young people seeking to live sober.
The main tasks of YPLOs include:-
- Receiving and answering email, telephone and other enquiries from young people,
- sharing experience, strength and hope about getting sober at a young age,
- Assisting Public Information Officers with presentations where the audience is likely to include a significant proportion of young people, e.g. talks to schools, universities, young offenders’ institutions etc.
- Helping to develop PI material which will carry a clear message to young people
- Developing contact lists of those who came into AA at or before the age of 30 who are available and willing to assist with talks, 12-Step calls and other service to help, in particular, young people
- Encouraging young people to enter into all aspects of service (where the recommended qualifications for sobriety are met). Younger people are needed in all service disciplines, in part to ensure that the perspective of young peopleis represented
- Supporting AA activities such as Workshops, Conventions and PI events aimed at young alcoholics both within and outside the YPLO’s Intergroup or Region.
Share Liaison Officer
SHARE/Roundabout Liaison Officers provide the essential contacts between members, groups and the editorial teams. They actively encourage the contribution of articles and letters and the promotion of the magazines.
