Telephone Service & 12th Step Work

Volunteering for Telephone Service or 12th Step work means you could be the first person in recovery that a suffering alcoholic has spoken to. A minimum of 12 months' continuous sobriety is suggested.

Telephone Service

Volunteers work mostly from home as a team connected via Zoom and the Horizon App so you will need desktop/laptop computer and a smartphone. Weekday shifts can also be done in our office near Tower Bridge.
Each shift lasts 4 hours and the daily rota is:
  • 10:00 - 14:00, 14:00 - 18:00 and 18:00 - 22:00
Full training will be given. If you are interested in becoming a Telephone Service volunteer please contact Malaika at telephones.londonsw@aamail.org

Responders

These are people who take calls from the telephone office with details of people who have rung wanting to learn more about AA in their area. They pass these details on to a 12th Stepper.
Responders do 4-hour shifts when they are expected to be available to take calls from the Telephone Office. The rota is:
  • Mon - Fri 18:00 - 22:00
  • Sat / Sun 10:00 - 14:00, 14:00 - 18:00 and 18:00 - 22:00

12th Steppers

12th Steppers take calls from Responders and contact the person directly. They will typically have a chat, talk a bit about AA and perhaps take the person to a meeting if that's what they want.
The rota for 12th Steppers is completely flexible. You choose times that suit you.
