Birmingham Intergroup is here to help all members of A.A. in the Birmingham area as well as the wider community. Intergroup is comprised mainly of representatives (G.S.R.’s) from meetings both in person and Zoom based in Birmingham along with various liaison officers.
Main purposes of an AA Intergroup (UK):
1. Support Local AA Groups
Helps groups stay connected and informed.
Shares experience, strength and hope on service issues (e.g., running meetings, safeguarding, finances).
Provides guidance based on AA traditions and concepts.
2. Public Information & Outreach
Intergroups organise:
Talks in schools, GP surgeries, hospitals, prisons.
Liaison with professionals (healthcare workers, clergy, social services).
Local websites and helplines.
This helps alcoholics find AA more easily.
3. Maintain a Local AA Helpline
Many intergroups run the 24-hour AA phone line for their area—essential for newcomers seeking immediate help.
4. Organise Local Service Positions
Intergroup appoints trusted servants for:
Public Information (PI)
Health Liaison
Employment Liaison
Prisons Liaison
Armed Services Liaison
Young People’s Liaison
Web/tech support
Treasurer, chair, secretary, etc.
These roles support groups and the wider community.
5. Regional Representation
Intergroup elects Regional Representatives to take local issues and views to the AA regional assembly (which then connects to AA’s national General Service structure).
6. Coordinate Events & Workshops
Workshops about sponsorship, chairing, traditions, service roles.
Conventions and service events.
