August 2023 - SHARE EDITORIAL

Dear Reader

The dictionary definition of insight is, “the capacity to gain an accurate and deep understanding of someone or something.” For me, by the time I got to exploring Step Eight in depth, I was beginning to build a better relationship with myself – and with my Higher Power. I knew I had to continue to go more deeply into the Steps and, for that, I had to make that list and become willing to make amends to all those I had harmed. Some amends have taken years to do – I’ve always been willing, I just had to wait for the right opportunity, in some cases. One amend I can make every day is to not pick up that first drink and continue to live a sober life. This ensures that my capacity for understanding myself, and others, continues to increase as I grow through recovery. From the bleakness of my past, through awakening to the beauty of the world we live in, to finally being able to cross that bridge into the unknown adventures of each day, I can now experience peace – thanks to our Programme of recovery.

Much of AA’s work is done by Fellows giving of their time - freely and with gratitude. However, Tradition Eight reminds me that AA does have paid administrative staff, and how fortunate we are to have such a supportive, dedicated team whose commitment to our Fellowship is without question.
We asked if you had found sobriety in prison or if your journey had been enhanced by doing service in prison, for our additional August theme. Thank you for the articles reflecting this theme, which we have published this month.

May I draw your attention once again to our deadlines – if you wish a specific Step, Tradition or Concept article to be published, we do need to receive it at least a month prior to the relevant month – earlier if possible

On a final note, we recently welcomed our newly-appointed Assistant Editor to the SHARE Team, bringing our Team up to full strength and ensuring continuity over the next few years.  I am extremely grateful to be able to gradually hand over the Assistant Editor’s role and responsibilities during the coming months.
