Travelling With The Serenity Prayer

I had a problem checking-in online, and because I intended to be at the airport in plenty of time I decided to complete it when I got to the airport. But at Edinburgh Airport I was informed that on my connecting overnight flight from London I had been put ‘on standby’! I couldn’t believe it because the flights had been booked well in advance and I thought I’d have to stay in a hotel overnight, making the whole journey so much longer. So firstly I was worried, then upset and then, of course, angry. “This is ridiculous! Why me? I’ll never use this airline again!” … and on and on. I know, you know, what my head was like.
Anyway 10 minutes’ later ‘Accept the things you cannot change’ came into my head and I thought that since there was nothing I could do about it there was no sense getting into a state and ruining my day. That was of course the correct decision – but one I have only been able to make since coming to AA, completing the 12-Step Programme, and staying to keep on learning how to live my life. When I arrived at the Connections Desk it transpired that the whole thing was a mistake. Apparently they thought I was two people and there wasn’t an extra seat for that person who didn’t exist anyway. What a relief – and the rest of the journey was really pleasant.
Over the years I’ve had many occasions to use all three parts of the Serenity Prayer: Courage to change – that’s often having to change me, and Wisdom to know the difference – I’ve learnt to take time to get that part right instead of bashing on - my way! Without AA I wouldn’t have the life I have today and the Serenity Prayer has taught me how to manage my life. Thanks to all who have been part of my journey.
