Arnold’s Story

The Drink Delusion

Robbing a bank might have solved my financial problems, but it wasn’t a serious possibility because I didn’t have the courage and would have been caught. When it came to bank robbery, I was able to use sane and rational judgement but when it came to my drinking, sane and rational judgement didn’t exist. I was in trouble time and time again through drinking and it nearly ended my life. However, the delusion persisted that everything would be ok. I thought I could have just one or two, although that was never the case. If I had a drink, it was like being on ‘Mastermind’ – I’ve started, so I’ll finish. Denial is when I insist something isn’t true when it is. Delusion is when I continue to say that, despite evidence to the contrary. In my case, that was abundantly clear. I was blind to the fact that my drinking was the problem. I was deluded!
