The God bit. Lots of people seem to come along and like AA but then they hear or see the 'God' bit and are not so sure. But we have those words in Bill's story as his friend suggests that novel idea, "Why don't you choose your own conception of God?" (BB p12) To people outside the Fellowship this can seem to be a bit nuts but for many of us it's a life changer. Many of us acknowledge that we are a bit nutty anyway. In meetings this Higher Power is described in many different ways, Group Of Drunks, Gift Of Desperation, Great Out Doors and more. For most of us probably the most important thing here is that we are not God. Many of us thought that the world should revolve around us, our way was so much better, our schemes were so clever, if everyone would only listen to us!
But then our world came crashing down in a crazy avalanche of alcoholic fuelled behaviour. Even then when we saw our lives demolished and hopeless many of us were still looking down on most of those around us. Even then we maintained that we were right and everyone else was wrong. But in that dark moment many of us were shown in AA that following our admittance of powerlessness over alcohol a simple belief in something bigger than the gaunt face we looked at in the mirror could be the answer we were searching for
For us Alkies alcohol is certainly a power greater than us. One drink leads to mayhem despite our intentions to do the complete opposite. "Lack of power, that was our dilemma." Many of us in recovery have found that power and the solution that comes with it.
