Firstly, a very happy and healthy New Year to all our readers, subscribers and contributors from everyone on the Roundabout team.

January is traditionally a time for reflecting on the past year and making resolutions or promises for the year to come.

In Alcoholics Anonymous we all have our past track records when it comes to promises made to ourselves or to others. We used to break them as quickly as we made them because we were in the grip of alcoholism.

We would mean it wholeheartedly when we promised not to drink. We and those closest to us would end up in frustrated despair when we failed, yet again, to be true to our word.

Alcoholics Anonymous offers a solution to our problem. By attending meetings and listening we learn there is no need to make resolutions to never lift a drink again for the rest of our lives.

Instead, we learn ‘just for today’ to not take a drink and welcome into our life the 12 Step Programme which offers us ‘a design for living beyond our wildest dreams.’ We finally learn to live a sober life and as our lives get better so too do the lives of those around us.

To become a reliable, dependable individual living a gloriously normal life is the stuff of dreams. Many alcoholics in Scotland have been given this gift. All we are asked to do in return is to pass on what was freely given to us.
