Do it anyway

I am not one to phone people just for the sake of it.

I am not one to phone people just for the sake of it. Never have been. Wouldn’t know what to say. Would assume they would be busy, irritated or worse – bored. That’s what my head tells me, but my experience in AA has been exactly the opposite.

When I first came in to the Fellowship I was given phone numbers and encouraged to “pick up the phone, not a drink”. That was a powerful tool to have for someone who was powerless over alcohol and a reminder that I was no longer alone. I was still hesitant to use it, but whenever I did, the person at the other end was invariably genuinely happy to hear from me. What a surprise!

I heard in AA meetings that whenever one AA talks to another, both benefit and I have certainly found that to be true. I sometimes get calls from other AA members asking to go for coffee, or who need a hand with something or, best of all – no reason – just want to have a quick blether. They always leave me feeling better about life and about me. That’s a gift that I’m grateful for.

So my suggestion is: If you feel like others won’t want to hear from you, or will be too busy to talk to you, or you don’t have anything wonderful to say, etc (you get the picture) - pick up the phone and do it anyway.

You will be in for a pleasant surprise!
