10 June 2015

On the 10th June 2015 we celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous.

Public Information Sub-Committee (PISC) of the General Service Board of Alcoholics Anonymous, Great Britain

10 June 2015

On 10 June 2015 we celebrate the 80th Anniversary of the founding of Alcoholics Anonymous. It was set up in the US in Akron, Ohio. The founders were Bill Wilson, a New York stockbroker and Dr. Robert Smith, a surgeon in Akron, both had been hopeless drunks. They realised they could help each other with a mutual understanding of their problems, where other methods had failed.

Alcoholism crosses social, economic, age and gender boundaries. People from all walks of life find that drinking is costing them more than money. For each alcoholic who stops drinking, untold numbers of families, friends, neighbours and employers, as well as healthcare, psychiatric, social and probation professionals also benefit.

Today we estimate that there are more than 2 million successfully recovering members of Alcoholics Anonymous in more than 180 countries World Wide. In Great Britain there are about 4,500 groups meeting weekly with a membership estimated at around 40,000.

Our free national number is 0800 9177 650.
