A dear friend of mine in our Fellowship often shares in meetings that she is now able to “spread her wings and fly away”. She can do this, she maintains, only as a result of attending meetings and actively practising our Programme on a daily basis.

After hearing this tale of wing-spreading for the thousandth time (OK, I exaggerate a little), I began to see her point and my scepticism started to slip away. I could see that she was referring to a new found freedom, new horizons, new beginnings; a new way of life. She was, it was very clear to me, on the Programme and on the well-trod path of recovery.

This month, being the ninth month, we put the ninth Step and Tradition in the spotlight. In Step Nine we are urged to make direct amends to all persons we had harmed. Not just the easy ones, who will know will give us an easy time. Everyone.

Many of us share that having made these direct amends, having atoned for past behaviour, they feel a far greater sense of freedom. They report that they can see the past, and their part in it, far more vividly and with greater clarity but that they are distanced from it. They have broken free of it and are now living in the here and now. They are now living rather than existing.

Which brings me back to the perma-share on “spreading wings”.  In recovery, we truly are able to spread our wings and fly away from the past and into a new life.  It needn’t be difficult and it needn’t cost anything either: all we have to do, as our friend says, is attend meetings and practise the Programme. A small price to pay to for ultimate freedom.
